Marché Bastille

Stretching along Boulevard Richard-Lenoir between Place de la Bastille and Rue Amelot, Marché Bastille is one of the largest open-air food markets in Paris, with around a hundred stallholders setting up twice a week. It is a 'marché volant' -- assembled and dismantled the same day -- set on the site of the old Canal Saint-Martin, which Haussmann covered over in the 19th century. A smaller market runs on Thursday mornings; Sunday's is the big one, packed with cheese, seafood, rotisserie chicken, and North African and Middle Eastern food stalls.
