About

Gudeg Yu Djum traces back to 1951, when Ibu Djuwariyah -- known as Yu Djum -- began carrying gudeg through Yogyakarta on a shoulder pole, selling around the town square and along Malioboro before settling in the Wijilan area. She opened a permanent stall there in 1985, now grown into a full restaurant near the Kraton's Plengkung Wijilan gate. The kitchen still cooks young jackfruit in coconut milk and palm sugar over wood fire for hours until it turns dark and dry, a style that keeps for days and has made this address a Yogyakarta institution for over 70 years.
